Ushuaia is situated over the homonymous bay, and is also part of the Beagle Channel. Its name comes from the “Yamana” language and means “bay that goes into the west”. The city developed itself at the foot of mount Martial. That is why the streets ascent and descend, fact that gives an special attractive to the urban aspect in general. During autumn time, the surrounding forest changes its colour providing the city with an incredible reddish background. In winter, when snow falls down, the urban landscape changes completely and everything gets covered with a white mantle. Anyway, life goes on in the city. Every summer, many cruises arrive to the port of Ushuaia, bringing numerous groups of tourists anxious to know “the end of the world” or “the beginning of the world”. Ships traveling to the Antartida, also stop here. At present, the city has 44.000 inhabitants. A short trip to the southwest leads us to the entrance of the Tierra del Fuego National Park .
